Canal Walk

The James River and Kanawha Canal was a canal in Virginia, which was built to facilitate shipments of passengers and freight by water between the western counties of Virginia and the coast.
The canal was built in 1785, planned by George Washington himself, but it was only half completed by 1851. It was an expensive project, which failed several times financially and was frequently damaged by floods. After the American Civil War, a massive flooding in 1877 destroyed the canal project.
In the second half of the 20th century, portions of the old canal, locked and turning basins became the source of renewed interest in Richmond. As part of Richmond's revival, a portion of the canal was restored. Richmond's Canal Walk extends for 2 km parallel to the old Haxall and James River and Kanawha canals.

This was the place where me and my photography friends took some pictures last weekend. The challenge was to shoot according to a specific subject that was selected randomly. My assignment was to shoot Architecture!

I hope you like it!

Sweet&Salty February

Oh my sweet lord, 29 days have passed and February was actually exciting:
  • It snowed, like I wished for :) Just for a night but it was perfect!
  • I met the Groundhog and Leap days. ahah! so funny
  • I had to say goodbye to my Chilean friend :c and a farewell to my Portuguese buddy :c
  • I went to the Mediterranean East restaurant as well as the Cantonese restaurant. And of course, the Portuguese restaurant (my kitchen I should say) every single day :)
So, now, it's time for March! And I cannot wait for flowers and birds to come.
Hey, and you know what: I'm going for my Spring break to Canada!!! I'm so thrilled right now!!

vintage sewing

I saw a quote one of these days saying that vintage clothes are just a fancy word for old and smelly clothes. lol Well, vintage clothing is a very hot topic and always will be, that’s for sure. But you have to agree with me about the amazing talent and workmanship that goes in to detailing clothing.
Most people use the words "vintage" and "antique" interchangeably. There are, however, several periods of time which are defined.
According to wikipedia, antique is defined as:

An item which is at least 100 years old and is collected or desirable due to rarity, condition, utility, or some other unique feature.

A rough definition of time periods and definitions is as follows:

Gregorian: pre- 1837
Victorian/Edwardian: 1837 - 1910
Art Nouveau/Art Deco: 1895 - 1925
Retro/Vintage: 1940 – 1980

Last week, a friend of mine invited me to her place because she inherited a TON of vintage sewing and craft things from her grandparent. So, after taking what she wanted, she organized a swap. I felt I was in a garage sale back in 1963: there was patterns, pins, thread, buttons, some costume jewelry, some fabric and other flotsam. Well, I just brought a couple of things with me but don’t get me wrong… I wish I just know how to sew!

I hope you like it!

Silent night

Maybe because I thought really hard about the snow, it really happened this time! Yesterday Richmond had a snowy evening...such a blast! The silence and the beauty caught together in the same night...
